What Happens In Your First Ice Skating Lesson
In your first ice skating lesson, you will learn how to stand, move, and stop safely on the ice.
The focus is on building confidence and control, not speed or difficulty.
Lessons take place at Lee Valley Ice Centre and are tailored to your starting level.

Before You Step On The Ice
You do not need experience to begin.
Before your lesson:
Choose a pair of well-fitting hire skates
Dress in comfortable, warm layers
Allow a few minutes to get ready
You will be guided through everything else.

The First Ten Minutes
Your lesson begins with:
how to stand safely on the ice
how to find your balance
how to move with support if needed
This stage is about feeling stable and comfortable.

Learning to Move
Once balanced, you will start to:
move forward with control
glide short distances
begin to understand how your body affects movement
Small, controlled movements are key.

Learning to Stop
Stopping is one of the most important early skills.
You will learn:
a safe and simple stopping technique
how to slow down with control
This builds confidence very quickly.

Steering and Direction
Depending on your progress, you may also begin:
gentle direction changes
basic turning movements

What You Will Not Be Asked To Do
In your first lesson, you will not be expected to:
skate fast
perform advanced skills
“keep up” with others
